As the cast and crew of Once Upon a Mattress bowed during curtain call, the time and talent students had put forward into creating the show was evident. Having worked hard since September, the Once Upon A Mattress cast delivered their opening night performance on Thursday, Jan. 12. After all of the creative energy that the cast and crew poured into the musical, it came together to form an exciting and exhilarating experience for both the audience and the cast and crew.
“This experience has been really great for me because other than just improving my vocals and acting skills, I’ve also found that we’ve grown as a community,” Lindsey Adams ‘19 said. “It’s just been a really nice builder of friendships.”
The musical, very much like the story of The Princess and the Pea, follows young Prince Dauntless and his mother’s search for the perfect princess. Finding a princess that will please his mother turns out to be a difficult challenge, as she tests every princess specifically on subjects that they will fail. No one in the kingdom is allowed to marry until Dauntless is wed, so Knight Harry leaves the kingdom to find the perfect princess, and returns with Princess Winnifred. The musical kept the audience on their toes with a lighthearted storyline filled with jokes and lively musical numbers.
“I really like the songs in the musical because I really like singing and dancing and being present in the moment and that differs from normal theater which is why I like musical.” Elizabeth Widner ‘19 said.
Throughout the musical, the characters, songs, and dialogue created an unforgettable show. The cast and crew worked together to facilitate a smooth performance. Once Upon A Mattress will perform on Friday, Jan. 13 at 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at the PAC.
“Honestly, I love seeing it all come together,” Miranda Primm ‘17 said. “Sometimes our last dress rehearsal is a little rougher, but then once opening night magic happens, it always pulls itself together and everything goes way better than expected and that really boosts the morale of the whole group and it just feels good.”
