The JV boys’ basketball team took down the McNeil Mavericks as they played them for the second time this season on Tuesday, Jan. 30. The team had previously lost to the Mavericks and were eager for a rematch. Their readiness to win and positive attitude allowed them to gain the victory, 56-37.

The Warriors started the game with a three-point shot by Jacob Hines ‘18. The boys continued to keep the ball in their possession which allowed for multiple shots. Thisadvantage gave the Warriors a lead of 20-12 at the end of the first quarter.

Starting in the second quarter, the Mavericks became more successful in making shots, but the Warriors’ defense was able to hold the team back. With effective rebounds and steals, the Warriors maintained their lead of 29-24 going into halftime.

“After two close games last week and two outcomes that were hard to swallow we were ready to get back on the court and show McNeil what we can do,” Hines said. “Everything clicked. We shot almost 50 percent from the floor and moved the ball around finding the open man.”

After halftime, the Warriors came back onto the court with new energy. The boys slowly gained a strong lead with help from three-point shots by Corey Levinson ‘19 and Ashton Theimer ‘19. The Mavericks were unable to gain many points which gave the Warriors a lead of 49-28 at the end of the third.

Throughout the fourth quarter, the Warriors’ game play stayed constant with good ball movement and communication. There were more fouls called on the Warriors, but this was unable to shake the boys. They won the game with a score of 59-37.

Point guard Hines moved to Westwood in the fall and is now a valuable member to the JV team.

“Being new to the school I don’t really have strong feelings about beating McNeil, but a win is a win,” Hines said. “Knowing it means a lot to my teammates, I’m glad we got the job done.”

The JV boys’ basketball will face off against Stony Point in their next home game on Friday, Feb. 3. at 5:30 p.m.. Go Wood.
