The University of Texas at Austin (UT) will be holding its annual Edison Lecture Series on Tuesday, Feb. 21. Since 2005, the computer and engineering department at UT have targeted their lecture toward middle school and high school students to promote career choices in the engineering field.

“I think it’s a great opportunity,” graphic design teacher Ms. Vicky Tarver said. “Not only does it give [students] the opportunity to do the graphic design with the poster contest, the kids get to see the technology that the Edison Series and the engineering department present.”

Engineering and graphic design classes will be attending this year’s lecture on fiber and light. Previous lectures have covered other engineering related topics, including robotics, microprocessors, and renewable energy. Students will also be able to participate in a poster designing contest for next year’s theme, autonomous vehicles.

“I’m excited to see other people’s designs [in the poster contest],” Julia Crowley ‘19 said. “Autonomous vehicles is an interesting topic. It could be beneficial in preventing crashes, like with drunk drivers.”
