Eager to compete in their first district game, the varsity baseball team entered the Dell Diamond to play against the Hendrickson Hawks on Tuesday, March 21. The Warriors started out strong, but fell short 0-3.
The team showed their readiness to play by starting with several hits that did not allow for any runs. Pitching began well with Nolan Tenpas ‘17 on the mound, prohibiting the Hawks from scoring until the third inning. The Warriors struggled with errant pitches which resulted in walks for the Hawks, allowing them to eventually score.
“We started out with a lot of good momentum because everyone went into the game super hyped up and excited because we were playing at the Dell Diamond,” Jake Morrow ‘18 said. “In the third inning we struggled at the mound, couldn’t throw strikes, and hit some people. After the third inning we remained strong defensively, but did not generate runs offensively.”
As the game progressed, Nick Manasso ‘18 and Morrow both pitched. Although the Warriors allowed three runs, their defense was able to stay strong in the rest of the game due to good plays by Ian Cox ‘19 and Kody Clements ‘17. However, their efforts were not enough to overcome the Hawks and they were defeated 0-3.
“Knowing the potential we have to be great, it’s frustrating when we don’t live up to that. Everyone as a whole was frustrated last night, but I think they lit a fire under us that made us realize that we can’t play like that,” Morrow said. “We have to be able to generate runs, swing the bat, make adjustments at the plate and mound, and throw strikes.”
The Warriors will take on the Hendrickson Hawks again this Friday, March 24 at 7 p.m. at the Westwood baseball field. Go Wood.
