April 14 is the spring signing day for student athletes to officially commit to their chosen college. Westwood’s highest point earner varsity swimmer, Preston Varozza ‘16, signed to swim for the University of Texas at Austin (UT) for this upcoming fall. This is a huge accomplishment because according to the NCAA, UT’s Men’s Swim Team has claimed the national championship title two years in a row. Preston grew up loving UT because a lot of his family attended, which made him that more excited to be on the team. Another reason he chose UT is because they have a wonderful academic program that prepares students for the real world, and he is inspired daily by their athletic programs. The students are really supportive of each other at the UT, and Preston is looking forward to being a part of the Longhorn community.

“The University of Texas swim team has a great group of guys,” Varozza said. “They all push each other to be great and nobody is able to slack off. They stay on top of each other in and out of the pool because athletics and academics are equally important to them and the university.”

Preston is really excited for the upcoming future, and the most exciting part for him is moving out in the fall. He wants to learn how to be more independent, while doing something he loves. During Preston’s official visit to the UT, he got to hang out with another incoming freshman from Pittsburgh.

“He will be my roommate next year and I’m looking forward to getting to know my teammates more,” Varozza said. “He and I both signed this morning, and I know I was relieved signing the paper to officially be committed to the University of Texas. Now I have a set school that I will earn my degree at.”
