Ugly Sweaters on Display

The ugly holiday sweater trend was driven by Bill Cosby’s The Cosby Show  and Chevy Chase’s National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation in the 80’s, but its popularity started to fade in the 90’s.

But somehow in the past decade, the rise of the ugly christmas sweater began again. Why? According to the Tipsy Elves, one of the largest holiday themed sweater brands, the trend started up again because of one Canadian Christmas party in the early 2000s. Word of the party soon spread to the United States and over the years evolved into the ugly phenomenon we have today.

National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day falls on Dec. 16, and a lot of people will go to a themed sweater party to celebrate. Partygoers compete to have the most outrageously ugly sweater, and winning the ugliest sweater award is considered high accomplishment for many.

On Dec.14, Westwood faculty and staff donned their own ugly sweaters, providing a welcome relief from the stress of final exams. Check out the gallery to see just how hideous it got.
