The varsity girls’ soccer team destroyed the Hendrickson Hawks 1-0 during their first district game on Friday, Jan. 27 at the Warrior Bowl.

As the game began, the Warriors made their way towards the goal, the Hawks’ defense was on their heels ready to strike. A defensive player from the Hawks blocked an attack, but Ella Concannon ‘18 managed to save the ball from going out of bounds just in time. Concannon moved the ball into shooting range and kicked the ball towards the goal, but the shot missed by as little as a foot. The Hawks soon gained possession and worked their way up the field. All of a sudden, Caroline Gillispie ‘18 stopped a long pass between two of the Hawks’ midfielders down the right side of the field, but the Hawks stole the ball back and hustled towards the penalty box. The crowd gasped as the Hawks’ main forward made a shot, but Maddi Kriz ‘19 dove on top of the ball, stopping it right before it entered the goal. At the end of the first half, the score was tied at 0-0.

“The first half was definitely high intensity play, but we sort of slowed down towards the end which hurt our game,” Concannon said.

With the second half underway, the Hawks fought to score, but Ryan Bowen ‘18 put a stop to every single one of their attempts with her killer center defense.

“We played really well as a team and brought great energy onto the field,” Bowen said. “Hendrickson is always a strong opponent, and we did what we needed to do in order to come together and hold it down at home for our first district game.”

As the game came to an end Autumn Koch ‘19 sprinted down the field, passing every Hawk that stood in her way, and scored a goal for the Warriors which assured them the win. The Warriors battled it out against the Hawks but were victorious with a final score of 1-0.

The Warriors will be playing their third district game, against Stony Point, on Friday, Jan. 3 at 7:15 p.m. at the Warrior Bowl.
