The varsity boys’ lacrosse team dominated in their first game of the season against the Cedar Ridge Raiders on Wednesday, Feb. 8 with a score of 15-11.

The Warriors were off to a strong start after the first quarter with a score of 5-0. The top scorer was Steve Szostak ‘17 with three goals, while both Miles Simpkins ‘18 and Brice Griffin ‘20 also added one to the board.

“I felt that it was really good, but I feel like there’s a lot of room for improvement,” Szostak said. “We might’ve scored a lot, but if we get the ball moving more, everyone will get a chance, and we’ll rack up the scoreboard.”

Following two more goals by Szostak and numerous, advantageous defensive plays, the Warriors brought the score to 7-3 by halftime.

“If we clean up our sticks a little, we’ll get a lot more shots and looks on cage,” Alex von Waaden ‘17 said.

By the third quarter, the Raiders were catching up to the Warriors with a score of 10-6, but in the end, the Warriors pulled ahead and were victorious. Attacking players Simpkins, von Waaden, Szostak and midfielders Hayden Franks ‘18 and Reese Green ‘18 combined their goals and smart plays to land at a total of 15 points.

“I think the game went great, it was a great start to the season,” Andrew Grosvenor ‘17 said. “We have a lot to work on, but if we keep up at this pace, we’re gonna have a great season.”

Even with their first win, the Warriors have a long season ahead of them with much to work on.

“I think defense was a little sloppy, and we get back to fundamentals, break down, not get lazy on the ride, that we can really stop them and get the ball on the offensive side,” Szostak said.

The Warriors face off with the Dripping Springs Tigers at Dripping Springs High School on Feb. 15.
