The JV boys’ basketball team took on the Cedar Ridge Raiders in their last game of the season on Tuesday, Feb.14. The Warriors played tough and were able to send the game into overtime, but fell short 51-59.

The Warriors started the game off strong offensively and defensively which allowed them to gain a lead of 10-4 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Raiders’ defense began to push back, but the Warriors were able to rebound well and keep control of the ball. The team went into halftime leading 19-18.

“I felt confident since we beat the team before,” Patrick Sladek ‘19 said. “However, I knew they were a strong team so I knew it would be a good game.”

Coming back from halftime, both teams seemed determined to gain points. Cedar Ridge began to push back on defense, but this lead to fouls, allowing the Warriors to score from free throws. However, in the fourth quarter the Raiders began to take the lead. With four seconds left in the game, the Warriors were down by three points and at the buzzer, Jacob Hines ‘18 shot a three-pointer to tie the score at 48-48 and move the boys into overtime.

“I was thinking we had to shoot a three or else there would be no overtime,” Hines said. “I scanned the court looking for a teammate who had a better chance of making a shot, but I saw the clock was about to run out and took the shot. When the ball went in I felt we had been given a second chance to win the game.”

The first points of overtime were scored quickly by Sladek which gave the Warriors a two-point lead. The Raiders soon gained control of the ball and because of fouls by the Warriors, were able to gain a lead. Coach Stephen Cobb called multiple timeouts to help the team, but at the end of overtime, the Warriors came up short 51-59.

“I remember my first time playing with my teammates in the fall league and I think about how much we have improved and how far we have come,” Hines said. “I am proud to have been on this team.”

The Warriors played a successful season overall. They will continue to train and improve their skills in the offseason. Go Wood.
