The fierce fight against the Dripping Springs Tigers came to a victorious end for the varsity girls’ lacrosse team with a winning score of 18-6 on Saturday, March 25. With the end of the Warriors’ season drawing near, winning by such a large lead meant the world to the team. Their use of bold, tactical plays and strong communication led the Warriors to their biggest win of the season.

“We won because we worked together as a team in defense and in offense, and we executed plays really well,” Manager Haley Haverda ‘18 said.

Merely a few minutes into the beginning half of the game, Stephanie Shih ‘20 received a forceful pass from Olivia Green ‘18. Evading the opposite team’s defense, Green ran and made a sharp shot that darted past the goalie for the Warriors’ first goal. Emily Huttenhower ‘18 and Green increased the Warriors’ lead (6-2) with two more goals. During the face-off, the Tigers obtained possession of the ball and drove it down the field, passing up the Warriors’ vigorous defense on their way. Just in time, Emma Bontempo ‘18 cut off the incoming player and seized the ball right from underneath her feet. Green secured a pass from Bontempo, but suddenly got triple-teamed and lost  the ball. Before it went  out of bounds, Green regained control of the ball, and threw it to Shih who scored another point. Towards the end of the first half, the Tigers appeared to up their aggression and began taking multiple powerful shots at goalie Kayla Shea ‘17. Shea blocked all three of their shots, defending the Warriors’ lead for the first half.

“I think the game is going pretty well, and we are all playing great,” Ivy Rae ‘18 said. “There are still a few things we need to work on, but we are doing a lot better than last week.”

Only a few minutes into the second half, the Tigers received a yellow card, which gave Jeanne Gentot ‘17 a free position to make a penalty shot. Moments later, Shih used her quick speed to race past the Tigers and made an assist to Huttenhower who scored. Causing an opposing player to lose their balance and wipe out, Gentot made a quick pivot turn and faked out her defender. With smart plays and agile technique, the Warriors continued to make one shot after another which ultimately gave them a winning score of 18-6.

“The game went really well because we had great communication with each other, and our transitions from one side of the field to the other were really smooth,” Jane Moritz ‘18 said.

The Lady Warriors will face off against Westlake High School at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 30.
