Swim Team Places Third in AISD Invitational Meet

The swim team participated in the AISD Invitational meet on Friday, Oct 20. There were two districts, 5A and 6A, and 21 different schools at this meet. The Warriors placed third overall with great effort from both the girls and boys. Although all teams competed together, the results were split by the two districts.
“Westwood normally wins this meet, so getting third place was quite a shock. Vandegrift moved into our region so we’ll need to keep our eye on them since they beat our guys’ team,” Emily Ngo ‘19 said. “This meet was really fun even though we didn’t win since I got to drop time, cheer on my teammate, and watch a really old school record get broken.”
There were many good times seen at this race, such as the 50-meter freestyle swam by KyAnh Truong ‘21. She swam 23.80 seconds, crushing the freshman record and the school record by over a whole second. As a freshman, Truong has already accomplished a lot at Westwood; being one of the fastest swimmers on the team and at the meet, a couple of boys who swam the same event even had times slightly slower than Truong.
“I would like to applaud KyAnh for her 50 free,” Coach Matt McBrearty said. “This is my first time seeing a girl record being broken at Westwood since I’ve started coaching. The team did great at this meet. There was one unfair call with the boy’s 200 medley relay but I was happy with the results. Many swimmers who went to practice last night and swam a lot of mileage also went after it at this meet, so everyone did great.”
Since there were so many teams at the meet, only the ‘A’ relays from each school were allowed to swim. The boys’ 200-meter medley relay would’ve placed second, but was disqualified. Coach McBrearty expressed that every meet counts; especially since there are less meets this year, there are no excuses at meets for being tired or unprepared.
“The meet was fun. I thought I swam decently well,” Huy Lai ‘21 said, “and the team did a fantastic job swimming.”
The Warriors will participate in the Round Rock Invitational meet next Saturday, Oct. 28.
