Warriors Defeat McNeil at Homecoming
Westwood’s Warriors (2-4) finished off homecoming week with a bang, by defeating the McNeil Mavericks on Oct 10. Throughout the first quarter, the Warriors prevented the Mavericks from scoring, but didn’t capitalise on this to score. However, this changed entirely during the second quarter. The Warriors were able to score off of a touchdown pass to receiver Travis Wilde ’15, as well as a field goal by Josh Burton ’16—bringing the score to 10-0 at the half. During halftime, however, the focus shifted from football to the crowning of the homecoming king and queen. After performances by both McNeil’s band, and Westwood’s band and Sundancers, the seemingly endless wait had ended. Last year’s homecoming king and queen came back to crown this year’s king and queen—Seniors Vikki Abad and Jesse Huang. In the second half, the Warriors held the Mavericks to a single touchdown late in the third quarter, and solidify their lead. On a trick play early in the third, quarterback Jack Swensen ’16 scored a touchdown on a 16 yard run. With 2:38 left in the third, Zachary Sigler ’15 recovered a fumble by the Mavericks, preventing them from gaining any more points. Later, the Warriors ended the game with another touchdown by Colton Kirkby ’15, solidifying their lead. The defense kept the Mavericks from scoring, guaranteeing the 31-7 victory. Westwood will play Stony Point at the Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex next Friday, Oct 17. The homecoming dance will take place that weekend, on Oct 18, at the Austin Music Hall.
