Preparing for this year’s season, the Lady Warriors’ softball team held its first ever annual dodgeball tournament on Saturday, Dec. 9. Team “Snoop Dodgy Dodge” ultimately won first place but 19 teams in total, composed of students, parents, and teachers, entered the tournament.

By charging each team of 10 players $100, the team was able to raise funds for its program.  In addition, barbeque sandwich meals were offered in the concession stands.

“The money earned will go toward our travel expenses, any type of apparel, equipment, field maintenance, and pretty much anything softball related,” Head Coach Lanea Meyer said.

While the fundraiser’s main objective was to support the softball program, the players went all out and maintained a competitive outlook. Some of the teams wore matching T-shirts and/or bandanas. Team “Duck Dynasty,” for example, played in camouflaged shirts.

“It seemed like the kids had a lot of fun, and at the same time we made some money, so I consider that a success in my book,” Meyer said.

The “Snoop Dodgy Dodge” team was thrilled to overcome the rest of the teams. Having a few baseball players on their team gave them a slight advantage.

“Winning the softball dodgeball tournament fundraiser was super exciting, not just because we had the best team name but because it was just a really fun day and full of good competition,” Meredith Reece ’18 said. “I’m not the best at dodgeball, but my team really worked hard to go almost undefeated in the tournament and end up champs.”

Since the tournament had such a great turnout, another dodgeball tournament has been planned for the end of the year before summer break. However, a hit-a-thon fundraiser will be announced sometime after team tryouts. As for the annual home run derby, it is uncertain whether or not it will be held this year.

“I might still have one but I’m trying to go in another direction where the girls will get pledges for hits that they have,” Coach Meyer said. “It’s going to be run a little different.”

While the team anticipates the upcoming spring season, tryouts have yet to be announced and will take place sometime in January.
