On Friday, Jan. 19, the Lady Warriors took a 2-1 win for their first home game of the season against the Anderson Trojans. The Warriors and the Trojans were tied most of the game, but the Warriors determination and strong communication lead them out with a win.

Starting the first half with strong attacks by Asha Samson ‘18 and Madison Larrea ‘18, gave the Warriors confidence throughout the first half. Almost hitting 20 minutes on the clock, Samson sprinted up the field to pass the Trojan defenders and make the first goal for the Warriors. Soon after, with 19:17 left on the clock, Anderson scored off of a free kick around 25 yards away from the goal. Fighting out the last 19 minutes, the Warriors dominated the rest of the first half with more attacks on goal and a strong defense left Madison Broadbent ‘21 to hardly touch the ball many times that half.

“We played well the first half and worked hard from the start,” said Christina Stephenson ‘18. “Coach Framjee was proud of us and the movement of the forwards in the first half. He told us to make sure we make space in the middle and keep the ball on the ground so we can continue to complete passes.”

Starting the second half, the Warriors maintained possession and completed more passes while splitting the field to open up space. Ella Concannon ‘18 distributed the ball to both sides of the field and opened up even more space for the Warriors to pass the ball quickly. Coming to the end of the first 15 minutes of the second half, Concannon dribbled up the field and passed Trojan defenders to pass a through-ball to Larrea to score the Warriors’ second goal. This secured their lead with a score of 2-1. After this, the girls’ defense stepped in, but their attack didn’t slow down. With many more attempts on goal, the Warriors continued to push for a stronger lead against the Trojans until the half was over. Nearing the end of the second half with nine minutes left on the clock, Trojan forwards got a shot off, but Broadbent dove to save the goal and kept the Warriors in the lead until the end of the game (2-1).

“We work well as a team and have a great team attitude,” Stephenson said. “When something needs to change in order to win we do whatever needs to be done.”
