“Wonder” chosen as part of RRISD reading initiative

WONDER-cover-694x1024Pick up a free copy of “Wonder” by R.J. Palacio in the library and be a part of the community-wide “One Book, One District” reading initiative for the 2013-14 school year! No, you do not have to return it. Instead, Deputy Superintendent of Administration and Instruction Dr. Martha Salazar-Zamora encourages all interested students and community members to write notes in the books, share favorite passages, and after finishing the book, pass it on!

RRISD specifically chose to sponsor this book for the initiative as to promote kindness. The story follows August (Auggie) Pullman, a fifth-grader who was born with a facial deformity. When Auggie’s mother decides that it is time for him to attend school with other children, he must deal with meeting hundreds of students who can not get past his appearance. The strength and vulnerability of Auggie’s character, and the kindness he inspires in others can teach the reader some powerful lessons.

Librarian Amy Woolsey discussed the book’s universal appeal. “Its Wonderful! Wonder is not limited to any specific group; there is something for everyone from parents to elementary, middle school, and high school students of all academic levels, to teachers, and other school faculty.”

The approximate $40,000 cost of the book study is funded by the $100,000 RRISD received in May as the winner of the H-E-B Excellence in Education Large District winner.
