Cedar Park Beats WHS Womens’ Lacrosse

Cedar Park Beats WHS Womens Lacrosse

On Wednesday Feb. 25, Westwood Womens’ lacrosse played their second game against Cedar Park in Brushy Creek. Although the game started out promising, the final score was 16-5, Cedar Park. Many of the girls hoped that they would win this game after a tough loss against Vandegrift on Feb. 22, but overall they thought they played better than they have in previous games.

“We played Cedar Park in our Tune Up tournament,” Allison Melton ‘16 said. “And I think we played a lot better this game than we did in that one and it was only a couple weeks ago.”

The first half started with Westwood winning possession on the draw and bringing the ball down to attack. After a few drives in, Kaitlyn McCall ‘17 scored the first goal of the game. Her goal, however, was quickly retaliated on Cedar Park’s side and the score evened out. Cedar Park then made another quick goal, leaving the score 2-1. After Cedar Park had scored two more goals, McCall was able to score again.

“It was nice to help the team get off to a strong start,” McCall said. “We didn’t end up winning but we all played hard.”

Cedar Park was able to make a few more goals and Westwood’s Kaylie Dittmer ‘16 was also able to make another goal and by the end of the half the score was 8-3.

“I thought the end score was going to be 9-2,” Olivia Green ‘18 said. “So by my standards, we were doing pretty good.”

In the second half, Ally Hayes ‘15 scored the fourth goal for Westwood and Julia Sigmund ‘16 scored the fifth.

“It was great to get in some more shots,” Sigmund said. “We just needed to run our offense better.”

The team took many shots on goal in the second half, but many were saved by the Cedar Park goalie, and although the score seemed rough, the coaches were overall pleased with their performance.

“I’ve definitely seen improvements from our last game with Cedar Park,” Head Coach Janelle Davis said. “We just need to work on our attack pressuring in the midfield and our defense becoming more unified.”

The girls’ next game is on Friday, Mar. 6 against St. Stephens.
