Following his dreamy single “10,000 Emerald Pools” and EP “Candy,” including the radio station hit “Electric Love,” singer and songwriter BØRNS’ first official album release date was bound to be drilled into the minds of thousands of his fans. At midnight on Oct. 16, about a year after the release of “Candy”, his thousands of patiently waiting fans were finally able to buy and listen to a full album by BØRNS. With a name like “Dopamine” fans could guess what the main theme of his album would be: Love. The chemical dopamine is technically a neurotransmitter and a neurohormone in the brain which is often present along with love and other emotions that produce adrenaline. The title couldn’t more accurately describe the 11 tracks written and sung by Garrett Borns.
Each song, though very different from the rest, is a wispy, sultry memory, emphasized by Garrett’s alto yet extremely masculine voice. From “American Money” in which he describes his lover’s eyes as “green like American money” to the title track, “Dopamine” in which we learn the reason for love each song describes a time, place, and feeling that we enjoy and relate to. While his sunny, upbeat jams are anything but slow and dark, “The Emotion” has a deep effect, burying itself inside of one’s head. “The Emotion” was actually the only song that wasn’t a single released in August’s pre-album release, leaving fans wanting more.
Not only does BØRNS’ music sound amazing recorded, it is equally as good and maybe even better live. 2015 has been a year full of touring and appearances for BØRNS; he has appeared on Conan and the Late Night Show with Seth Meyers, and has played at many festivals including Lollapalooza, South by Southwest, and Austin City Limits. The unique, psychedelic pop genre has now been revolutionized by BØRNS, and his fans are already sitting on the edge of their seats waiting for the next album.
