Westwood’s Warriors (0-6) were defeated 24-7 by the McNeil Mavericks (2-4) in their third district game on Oct 8.

During the first quarter, the Warriors were quick to put points on the board with a third-and-goal touchdown by Jack Swensen ’16, with 5:38 left in the first. The defense was able to hold the Mavericks in their own territory for the rest of the quarter, putting the score at 0-7 at the end of the first.

Throughout the second quarter, the dynamics of the game changed completely. The defense could not hold the Mavericks, giving up a total of 17 points by the end of the half. The Warriors’ offense could not overcome the initial momentum and allowed for frequent turnovers, even throwing an interception halfway through the quarter, bringing the score to 17-7.

After the half, during which the Westwood Warrior Marching Band performed the first three parts of their show, Let Me Fall, it was more of the same.

In the third quarter, the defense was able to hold the Mavericks and keep them from scoring, but the offense did not capitalize on the frequent turnovers. At the end of the third quarter, the score was still 17-7.

During the fourth quarter, the Warriors began to make a comeback, with several plays that gained them upwards of 15 yards—but were unable to score. With 46 seconds left in the game, the Mavericks scored another touchdown, sealing the score at 24-7.

Westwood’s Warriors will play Stony Point High School at Dragon Stadium on Friday, Oct 16.
