On Monday, Oct. 26, Ben Fields, a South Carolina high school resource officer was filmed taking a student around the neck and flipping her and her desk over. After she was out of her chair, he is seen throwing her across the room and then handcuffing her.
The whole incident began when the unidentified girl took out her phone in class. It is reported that the teacher repeatedly asked her to put her phone away. The girl refused. The teacher then called an administrator who also asked her to leave the class. When she refused, the administrator then called the resource officer. In the videos taken by students, Officer Fields can be heard saying “Are you going to get up or am I gonna have to make you?”. He then proceeded to flip the girl over and arrest her.
A new video later came out showing the student allegedly hitting the officer. Although it seems that she did not start hitting him until he had started flipping her over her desk, the sheriff’s department says that this also puts the student at fault.
While most students took out their phones to record what was happening, one student, Niya Kenny, stood up and spoke out against the cruelty. Kenny was arrested minutes later for the charge of “disturbing schools”, which was the same charge as the other girl.
The same officer involved in this incident was also involved in another incident back in 2007. Him and another officer were investigating a noise complaint when a man accused him of excessive use of force. Officer Fields threw the man to the ground, handcuffed him, and allegedly used a can of mace on him. The man’s wife was on the side taking pictures of this when Fields ordered the other officer to take her phone. However, when it came to a ruling, the jury voted in his favor.
Fields is now under investigation once again. On Tuesday, the FBI joined in on the investigation and the officer has since been fired.
