Lady Warrior Volleyball made their way to the Dragon courts, showcasing the district’s biggest rivalry. The varsity team had their last game before playoffs against Round Rock on Tuesday, Oct. 27, both battling for the title of District Champions. With promises of an intense game, students and parents filled stands on both sides of the gym, creating cheers that echoed. Even with the support and high hopes, the Westwood Varsity Volleyball team left the school with a heartbreaking loss.

The team finished the first set, winning at 25 points, but in the second game, Westwood came up short with a score of 25-23. This however didn’t faze many; the girls were determined to put up a fight.

“I wasn’t worried at all,” Vanessa Robinson ‘16 said. “I never for once doubted that we wouldn’t be able to fight back. I definitely don’t think we played our best volleyball, but for the most part we all gave one hundred percent effort and everyone tried their hardest.”

After losing the third set, the team was hesitant but came through, winning the fourth set with a score of 25-23. Now the game would be decided by the fifth set.

“We really needed to show up offensively because Round Rock had an amazing offense and they definitely showed up to play,” Kimberly Sladek ‘16 said about her thoughts on the last set.

Even though the game was a crushing loss, Tara Nelson, Coach of the Varsity team, still spoke highly of her team and their performance.

“Everybody really wanted it, but sometimes people have an off game. Things happen,” Nelson said. “I will say though, even if the girls weren’t playing their best, they were fighting the whole time; they are fighters.”
