Girls’ Varsity Basketball Defeats Cedar Park 42-34

The girls’ varsity basketball team edged past a tough Cedar Park team to win 42-34 on Tuesday, Dec. 1. The Timberwolves were not able to get enough past the excellent Warrior defense, which was backed by plenty of offense.

The Warriors started the game strong, giving up the only lead to Cedar Park’s first two points.  Once Sophie Taylor ‘16 opened up the Warriors’ scoring with a three, the girls continued to put offensive and defensive pressure on the Timberwolves.

“It was a good win against a really quality opponent,” Coach Davalos said. “I thought that was our best defensive effort on the season. When you hold a team like that to 34 points, usually that’s gonna be enough to win.”

By halftime, the girls led by ten at 24-14. Although the Warriors outplayed the Timberwolves in the first half, Cedar Park fought back during the second half, outscoring the Warriors 20-18.

“In the first quarter we didn’t let them get into the game,” Coach Davalos said, “and that was probably our most dominant quarter, so when you start well in sports like that, it takes a lot for the other team to come back against a good defensive team.”

Danielle Davalos ‘19 and Kelsey Haderer ‘16 contributed a couple threes to extend their lead during the first three quarters, but during the fourth, there was more back and forth and a few turnovers from each team.

“Coaches are perfectionists,” Coach Davalos said. “Every possession you try to correct things for the next possession and you try to take one game to correct it for the next game, so there’s always things you can work on and get better.”

The Warriors will look to better their offensive productivity and tighten their defense at home against Round Rock High School on Friday, Dec. 11.
