The boys’ varsity soccer team began its season playing three games at The Woodlands, finishing the weekend with a 2-1 record. Varsity soccer opened the weekend against Brownsville Rivera on Jan. 7, and won with a final score of 2:1 on goals from Doug D’Lacoste ‘17 and Brandon Fernandez ‘16. The next game on Jan. 8 was against Cinco Ranch, during which the Warriors failed to score, losing 0:1. On Saturday, the boys won by a final score of 2:1 on goals from Nik Vrudhula ‘17 and Adam Homza ‘16.

“Overall, it was an outstanding beginning,” Coach Duhon said. “For our efforts, we have been recognized by Top Drawer Soccer, a national website that follows select, high school and collegiate soccer, in their current state rankings as the #8 team in Texas. “

The following week, the varsity boys went 2-1 at the Governor’s Cup, defeating both Vandegrift and Houston Cesar Chavez 2:1.  The one loss came against The Woodlands, to whom they lost 0:4, partially due to illnesses and injuries to two starters and two reserves. Although those results dropped the Warriors out of the state rankings, they are still ranked #7 in the Texas-South region.

“In my 3 years at the helm of Westwood Soccer,” Coach Duhon said, “this [4-2] is the best record we have had after our first two tournaments.”

On Friday, Jan. 22, the boys played their first home game of the season against Smithson Valley, but lost 2:1, with the only goal coming from Josh Davis ‘16 in the 59th minute.

The week of Jan. 25 ended with one loss against Hendrickson by a final score of 0:3 and one win against the Rouse Raiders by a final score of 3:1. D’Lacoste added one goal to Homza’s two for the night.
The boys will continue their season with their next home game on Friday, Feb. 12 against Round Rock.
