Varsity Girls’ Basketball Crushes Round Rock 58-49

The Lady Warriors wrecked the Round Rock Dragons at the Field House on Friday, Jan. 12. With a final score of 58-49, the Warriors secured a three-game winning streak and put them 4-2 in district.

Although Round Rock quickly scored into the start of the game, the Warriors adjusted their offense and attacked the basket aggressively to catch up. Players like Makayla Coy ‘19 and McKenna Lindley ‘18 rebounded their own shots to redeem their missed attempts. Allyah Beaty ‘18 ran a destructive defense and intercepted passes from the Dragons for several turnovers. Skillful team work by Meaghan Hendricks ‘18 and Christie French ‘19 gained points to the Warriors’ score and ended the quarter 14-12.

The team excelled in defense, but the Dragons offense proved fierce as the Warriors stayed down by one point for most of the quarter. Beaty scored the first three-pointer for the team and prompted the lead 18-15 with only two minutes remaining in the half. The Dragons however scored twice to end ahead 19-18.

“The intensity this week stayed high and the energy from the crowd kept us going,” Annalise Galliguez ‘20 said.” We had a good game, but the start could’ve gone a lot faster, but defensively we were able to contain Round Rock.”

In the second half, Lindley started the Warriors on the right foot with a reverse layup and put the team up 22-21 and intercepted passes by the Dragons. Another three-pointer was shot by Beaty (25-34) and she ended the quarter by cutting through the middle and scoring while soaring above the Dragons’ defense (34-27).

“Our shots finally started to fall,” Hendricks said. “To get those shots, we were making better passes and hitting the person who was open instead of shooting a bad shot. With Allyah, McKenna, and I being seniors, we communicated well on the court and showed leadership to keep the energy the whole game. I always love playing with them knowing we don’t have many times left together on the court.”

To finish the game, Hendricks successfully scored several points including a three-pointer and cut past three defensive players to the basket. Four completed free throws by Lindley and Beaty assured the Warriors lead as they finished off the Dragons 58-49.

The Lady Warriors will be playing next on Tuesday, Jan. 16 against the Pflugerville Panthers at Pflugerville high school.
