Freshman Football Takes Down Austin Maroons 24-20

The freshman football team faced off against the Austin Maroons for their first win of the season. Losing the previous game, the Warriors rebounded with a 24-20 win. The game consisted of touchdowns from running back Emarion Lopez ’23 and quarterback Grant Jaeger ’23, and field goals by kicker Zach Harris’23.
“I [saw] the work ethic that they had shown all week long, I knew we had a great chance [to win],” coach Devin Hughes said.
The first quarter started with the Maroons scoring a touchdown, which was quickly countered with a touchdown by Lopez and a following extra point by Harris. The Maroons made another touchdown, and Jaeger and Michael Luddy ’23 attempted to score a touchdown before the quarter’s end, but ran out of time, ending the first quarter with the Maroons in the lead with a score of 12-10.
“My favorite play was when Grant got the first completion,” Izzy Nito ’23 said.
In the second quarter, Harris scored another field goal. Soon after, wide receiver Hayden Schultz ’23 made a touchdown followed by an extra point by Harris. No points were scored for either teams in the third quarter.
“I think the biggest challenge was just recouping our energy throughout the game,” wide receiver Xavier Mariscal ’23 said.
The fourth quarter started with the Warriors in the lead 17-12.With two down, Jaeger completed a winning touchdown with 14 seconds left in the game, ending the game with a winning score of 24-20.
“I could not be more proud of these boys, they have worked their butts off all week long,” Coach Hughes said, “And finally won it on the last play.”
The freshmen will play their next game against Hendrickson on Thursday, Sept.12.
