In the world of engineering, success is often only associated with men. But according to Girls Who Code, women are just as capable in this field. Sexism is prevalent in the field of engineering, with a negative stigma toward potential women engineers. Girls Who Code have set out to break such barriers.

According to a study conducted last year by the Congressional Joint Economic Committee, only 14% of engineers in the United States are women. Although this shows significant progress since the mere 5.8% of 1980, the number could still be improved a great deal.

Westwood’s chapter of Girls Who Code was founded this year by Jenna Han ‘16. She is now the secretary of the club, and is very proud of the way it’s turned out. She believes it’s a great way to encourage girls interested in computer coding and computer science.

“We want to spread it out into the feminine world,” Han said.“More girls need to involve themselves in this field. There’s a whole world out there that many girls don’t even know about, and it’s something very interesting, at least to me. “

Vice President Jessica Yu ‘17 agrees.

“Girls are not as involved in STEM fields as they should be. I myself was shy at first, because I thought it was something only guys should do,” Yu said. “There’s really no boundary other than what society sets up, and we want to inspire girls to break those boundaries.”

Both Yu and Han want to be involved in the STEM field in the future.

“I’m really interested in the biotech field,” Yu said. “This club has introduced me to great leadership skills that will be really useful in the future.”

The club meetings are held in Mrs. Patterson’s room (E1202) every Monday from 4:30 to 6. During meetings, girls are separated by skill level and taught by professionals to code and program.

Club members seem feel that the club is a great and entertaining way to unwind after a stressful day.

“I feel really secure talking about anything,” Yu said. “We’re a really great group of friends.”

Han agrees.

“It’s definitely something I look forward to.” Han said. “If you’re looking for a place to find friends and fun times while learning something cool, come check us out!”
