To begin their district portion of their season and series against Hendrickson, the varsity baseball team took on the Hawks on Tuesday, March 13. A fast paced game led to excitement from the field to the stands and the first district win for the Warriors with a score of 4-1.

“I was really confident going into tonight and was excited to get us started in district,” pitcher Nicky Manasso ’18 said. “The game was super exciting for me and I was really happy with how I performed.”

For all seven innings, Manasso pitched for the Warriors. Manasso started the game out strong with getting the Hawks out after only 11 pitches. Quick reactions from outfielders such as Trevor Kearsey ‘18 and Kyle Clements ‘19 allowed the Warriors to prevent the other team from scoring. However, in the second inning, the Hawks managed to get one man around the bases to score their only run of the night.

As the innings progressed, the teams quickly got each other out until the fifth inning. As Kearsey stepped up to bat, he immediately hit the ball and got on base. Followed by a double by Chad Dixon ‘18, Kearsey was able to get home. Marshall Dean ‘18 came up to bat next and was able to get to first along with allowing Dixon time to score. The Warriors were fired up as their next batter, Reed Harrington ‘18, stepped up to the plate with hopes of scoring again. Harrington was able to hit a double and got Dixon home. After this hit, there was a slight dispute started by a Hawk player, but the team was able to push forward and get excited for their teammates. The Warriors’ next batter was unable to score, but the inning ended with the Warriors leading 3-1.

“Some of the key parts of our game was Nicky throwing strikes and only allowing one hit,” Crider said, “along with us getting hits with runners on base that led to runs.”

In the sixth inning, Geraldo Garcia ‘18 was able to hit the Hawks’ pitch to get on first base. Jake Morrow ‘18 switched out as the baserunner and after a strong hit from Cody Crider ‘20, Morrow was able to get home to bring the score to 4-1. Manasso continued his consistent pitching in the final inning and was able to get the Hawks out for the Warriors to win 4-1.

“I feel good about playing Hendrickson again,” Crider said. “I feel like it’ll be a tough game no matter what, but I truly think this Westwood team has more potential then any team in a while.”

The Warriors will play Hendrickson again tomorrow, March 14 in a double header starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Westwood baseball field.
