Austin’s favorite ice cream shop, Amy’s Ice Cream, has been expanding across Texas rapidly, with creamy and rich flavors that have become well-known and liked amongst customers. Founded by Amy Simmons, this is a great place to go with friends to experience the eccentric Austin lifestyle.

The ice cream shop was fairly large with ample seating area, and had plenty of windows, allowing the light to stream in. Next to the front door were two small tables with Amy’s Ice Cream merchandise and promotional t-shirts. The store had quirky wall decorations that keep up with the current Austin trends, and truly epitomizes the “Keep Austin Weird” saying by sticking to its roots. In one corner of the store was a freezer for ice cream cakes whilst in the back, there was a photo booth, which was out of order at the time I visited. The ice cream flavors and prices are all clearly listed on blackboards, and the shop had plenty of toppings to go along with the ice cream. There was an outside seating area, and the back of the store connected to Phil’s Icehouse. The overall atmosphere was inviting and definitely made me feel comfortable. Although it was raining outside, and there were no other customers, I was able to relax in a nice seating area with kind employees and delicious ice cream.

Like a typical ice cream shop, Amy’s Ice Cream offers free samples. My family and I tried different flavors before purchasing our favorites. The employees were very nice, and it didn’t take much time to get our ice cream. The Sweet Cream ice cream was smooth and sweet, but tasted like classic vanilla and lacked the unique punch that the other flavors had. Next was the Strawberry ice cream, which was extremely sugary and soft and tasted like average strawberry ice cream that you can find at any general store. Finally, the Belgian Chocolate was also average, and much like the Sweet Cream, tasted plain without a spin on it. Although the classic ice cream flavors can taste amazing and it is important to offer them, it is more crucial for ice cream shops to have unique flavors. These three flavors would form a great Neapolitan ice cream, but were still on the bottom of our lists as they didn’t stand out and tasted like basic flavors that could be found at any other ice cream store.

There were several flavors that didn’t stand out, like the classic vanilla and chocolate flavors, but a couple did have the unique taste we were looking for. The Pumpkin Spice Latte ice cream was a seasonal ice cream and tasted very much like the frappuccino sold at Starbucks. It had a unique spin on the frappuccino and provided a different taste that I had not experienced before. The last two flavors that we tried were the Mexican Vanilla and the Dark Chocolate. The Dark Chocolate was smooth and not too bitter. It tasted like a dark chocolate bar but in a different form. The Mexican Vanilla ice cream was amazing; the flavor just burst in my mouth. It was the first time that I had enjoyed vanilla this much. It initially tasted like a classic vanilla, but then a peculiar spice pierced through the vanilla. The uniqueness of the flavor was what truly made the ice cream special. These three flavors stood out because of the small twists to make it more exclusive and that was what provided a special experience at Amy’s Ice Cream.

To go along with the ice cream, there were a huge variety of toppings arranged towards the front, ranging from candies, nuts, and fruit to cookies, sprinkles, and hot chocolate sauces. The sprinkles were free and added a little crunch on top of our ice cream.

Most of the flavors seem to be worth the price, and the shop fits well with the other ice cream shops in Austin, not being too expensive or cheap. The final cost of two small ice creams, Mexican Vanilla and Dark Chocolate with the free sprinkles, came to be roughly $8. Amy’s Ice Cream also offers a 20 percent student discount, which attracts a large number of student customers. The company also caters and offers free ice cream on a customers’ birthday if they are signed up on the email list.

Amy’s Ice Cream has grown remarkably since it was first founded and deserves even more development in the future. Along with the ice cream, I also loved how the shop had merchandise to sell, a photo booth, and ice cream cakes. The unique aspects of the shop truly make it stand out from the other local ice cream stores. The last three flavors, the Dark Chocolate, Mexican Vanilla, and the Pumpkin Spice Latte, were extremely distinct from the ones at a typical ice cream shop, and it was exciting to experience different types of ice cream and toppings. Overall, I was very satisfied with my trip to Amy’s Ice Cream, and I would give them four out of five stars. The company had great flavors, however, some improvements needs to be shown to create an even more unique experience for the customers.
