Westwood Sweeps Competition at AISD Invitational Meet

On Friday, Nov. 9 the swim team participated in the AISD Invite meet which takes place at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center each year. This year the school districts 5A and 6A competed, meaning there were 18 different schools who participated in the meet. The Warriors placed first overall with boys taking home the first place trophy, and girls placing second.
“I think the team swam really well,” Erica Stubbs ‘20 said. “Although girls got third there were a bunch of time drops and heat winners so I’m proud of them either way.”
Although overall the team got first, most swimmers were concentrated on getting a qualifying time for the TISCA [Texas Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association] meet.
“My main goal for this meet was to get a qualifying time for the 100 back,” Nidhi Hegde ‘21 said. “Even though I didn’t make it by around a second, I’m still going to try for next year.”
There were many good times in this race such as Jackie Liu ‘22 with a 1:10:35 in her 100-yard breaststroke, the boys’ 200-yard medley relay and KyAnh Truong ‘21 breaking the school record for the 100-yard fly.
“I’m happy with my times,” Truong said. “I’m going to work hard on getting faster, but I’m happy with how I did at the meet this year.”
Not only did the swim team do well at this meet, but the dive team members took home first, third, and fourth place, all scoring points for the team.
“My dives went pretty well,” Sami Greisdorf ‘21 said. “I was nervous at first but I’m really proud with how the three of us did.”
Through all the races and dives the teams spirit never wavered. Throughout the entire meet you could always see Westwood swimmers cheering on their fellow team mates, and pushing them to do their best.
“All of us were trying to get best times so we could go to TISCA,” Shreyush Shankar ‘21 said “So it was really cool seeing the team cheering for one another to do their best.”
This week the swimmers who met the qualifying times are preparing for TISCA where they will be going against some of the fastest schools in the state. This takes place on Friday, Nov. 16 through Sunday, Nov. 18.
