The JV girls’ basketball team took on the McNeil Mavericks on Friday, Dec. 14 and won 56-24.

The Mavericks began the game well with a few two-pointers, but the Warriors didn’t let them keep the lead for long. Jaslyn Williams ‘20 got a two-pointer and Serena Baruah ‘21 made a three-pointer to put the Warriors on the board. McNeil was able to get a few more shots in, but Emma Zion ‘21 got the ball back and made multiple two-pointers and a three-pointer, making the score 11-6.

“I feel like we played very well as a team,” Williams said, “We had good defense, good communication, a lot of ball movement, and a lot of successful shots.”

The Warriors, especially Megan Luu ‘21, made many shots in the second quarter, and didn’t give McNeil a chance to get a single shot in. A few fouls were called on each team and Peyton Halley ‘21 was able to make a free throw. The second half concluded with a score of 33-12 in favor of the Warriors.

“During the game, our ball movement was on point,” Halley said. “We forced a lot of turnovers that helped us win.”

The Mavericks started the third quarter with two fouls, allowing the Warriors to make three free throws. Dinah Bray ‘21 got a two-pointer, but the Mavericks followed suit and scored their own. The teams scored on each other repeatedly until the Mavericks ended the quarter with another foul and a score of 44-19, and the Lady Warriors still held the lead.

“We needed to work on a couple of things like boxing out more consistently,” Bray said. “But other than that I think we did pretty good”

Bray repeatedly scored two-pointers for the Warriors, ensuring their lead. The two teams racked up fouls and two-pointers, but the Warriors held the Mavericks back effectively and won 56-24.

The Lady Warriors will take on the Leander Lions next on Saturday, Jan 5.
