Soccer Area Champs

According to Coach Philip Duhon, Westwood Boys Soccer Team are Area Champions!  Last night, the Warriors were matched up in the second round against 10th-ranked Klein Forest, who had previously lost only one game this season.  Klein Forest struck first with a goal in the 13th minute that I felt was against the run of play.  The remainder of the first half for the Warriors was played on our heels.

At halftime, Coach Duhon spoke about playing without fear, and then senior Wesley Ng stood up among his team and gave an impassioned speech  which  took hold with the team and turned the tide of the game.  In the 43rd minute, David Gottardi slotted home a Brady Freehill free kick that the keeper could not corral, and in just the 46th minute the turnaround was complete as Tom Gottardi took a pass from Camron Lennon and did the rest of the work to make it 2:1.  The heroics were not over, as with 6 minutes left, Jason Dolan saved a penalty kick.

Ms. Cat here. I've taught journalism and advised the Westwood Student Press since 2013. Before that, I taught graphic design and advised yearbook staffs in Texas and California for 20 years. My undergrad degree is in Plan II Liberal Arts from the University of Texas at Austin, and I have a Master's of Education in Reading. I was an ASNE (American Society of News Editors) Reynolds High School Journalism Fellow in 2013. I earned my CJE (national certification as a journalism educator) in 2016. I was proud to be honored with the Edith Fox King award for journalism teachers in 2018. I love my job and it makes me especially happy when the newsroom is hopping and all the student journalists are busy following up on stories. If you are looking for my teacher website, click here.
