The Lady Warriors won 3-0 once again in their bi-district playoff game against the Manor Mustangs on Tuesday, Nov. 1, continuing their streak of perfect games. With this victory, the team set a new school record for 41 wins in a season.
“If anyone was down, everyone else brought them back up,” right side hitter Ashlyn Hill ‘17 said. “The people who usually don’t play, they got to play as well and they did really well, and everyone helped each other out a lot.”
Westwood won the first two sets with a strong lead, 25-11 and 25-10, but had a smaller lead against Manor in their final set, winning it 25-19. The team’s basic setup of stopping an attack and then setting the ball up for a counter helped the Lady Warriors score most of their points. A number of back and forth struggles that occurred in all three sets showed that the Lady Warriors are also capable of winning longer contests. The team switched out players so that almost every member saw action, meaning that all players helped contribute to their victory.
“I think that’s one of the best parts about playoffs – that it’s always a fight, you can never can place it,” outside hitter Tori Clitheroe ‘17 said. “I think that’s something we have to learn about ourselves, that no matter what, no matter who’s on the court, you have to finish the game ‘til the end, and I’m really glad that we were able to pull out a win in three, even if it was a little close in that last set. I believe and I know that my team has what it takes to go to state, so I won’t be here in a few weeks – we’ll be at state. I have full faith that if we play the way we know we can play and we’re able to eliminate on-force errors then you guys will definitely see us in the state.”
The Lady Warriors’ next playoff game takes place on Friday, Nov. 4 at 6:30 p.m. at Bryan High School against Klein Oak, continuing their fight to make it to state. Many of the Warriors are confident in their ability to advance to state, despite any hardships they may face in the coming games.
