On Thursday, September 25, the Theatre Department hosted its annual Talent Show in the black box at 6:30 p.m. Since its inception in 2010, the Talent Show has provided many students a way to exhibit their gifts, whether it be singing, acting, or magic.
“The Talent Show is great because the kids put it on,” head Theatre director Robbin Antil said. “They come out and audition; they perform.”
The Talent Show began with an introduction and welcoming by the MCs of the night, Dhrov Subramanian ‘15, Hayden McSorley ‘15, Jill Jackson ‘15, and Lauren Massey ‘15.
“It was really great collaborating with Jill, Dhrov, and Hayden, who are absolutely hilarious,” Massey said.
Throughout the show, the MCs had a running gag of girls, Massey and Jackson, versus boys, Subramanian and McSorley. They introduced each act with a short skit of their own.
“It was fantastic,” Massey said. “You were just put out there and you had to come up with something on the spot.”
Students taking the Beginning Acting class were required to audition for the Talent Show. A few freshman earned a spot in performing.
“You’re just out there, and no one really knows you,” Fallon McDonald ‘18 said. “Everyone’s, not really determining, but ‘can they really do this?’”
For the seniors, performing in the Talent Show was bittersweet.
“It was weird to have it be the last time that we’d be performing like this on the stage,” Anna Carey ‘15 said. “It’s always been something to do with our friends; it’s casual and it’s just fun to be with everyone.”
The intimate black box provided a unique performing experience.
“I really like the way the black box feels,” McDonald said. “I like how you can’t see the audience because the lights are just there.”
The Talent Show included original songs, spoken-word poetry, comedy skits and monologues, covers and parodies of popular songs, renditions of Broadway songs, and a magic show.
“It was exhilarating to perform,” Dalton Williams ‘17 said. “It was a great experience.”
