Despite the 40 degree weather, the JV tennis team returned home from their first individual tournament of the season with many medals. On Nov.13, the team traveled to Georgetown and competed in the cold for almost nine hours with no indoor shelter to keep warm. This was the start to the individual season which means that the scores are not totalled for a victory for the school, but rather the students compete for first place on their own in different draws. Many school competed in this tournament including Georgetown and McNeil.
“I had a lot of fun playing matches all throughout the day, and it was awesome to see and play all the high schools that came out,” Matthew Powell ‘18 said.
The team was either competing on the court or bundled up with blankets together trying to keep warm.
“Tournaments like these are really fun because they last almost all day and when we’re off the court, we get to know our teammates better and cheer on our others too,” Adra Kreiling ‘18 said.
The JV team had many players that reached the finals of their draws received first place, even though the trip to those finals may not have been easy.
“I didn’t expect to win the whole thing, when we got into the finals, I was stoked,” Powell said. “The last point in the finals, I hit the winning shot, returning an overhead and the ball went in between both players. It took me a while before I realized we had won the whole thing. It was this amazing feeling of victory that rushed through my entire body. We had won. I couldn’t get it out of my head.”
