On Saturday, Oct. 3, the Westwood Warrior Marching Band competed in the Vista Ridge Invitational Competition at John Gupton Stadium. This was the band’s second time competing this season. They performed the first three movements of their show, “”Let Me Fall. “”
As usual, a portion of the stands was filled with the proud band parents waving flags, holding up banners, and cheering their children on.
“Their show is coming together,” Tanya Mavrodieva, mother of Kremena Mavrodieva ‘16 said. “It’s getting better and better.”
The band first performed in the preliminary round of the competition during the afternoon. Following this performance, the members of the band felt like their hard work had paid off and they had put their best effort out on the field.
“It was a pretty good run,” Kremena Mavrodieva ’16 said. “There were a few bumps, but we recovered quickly.”
The band came in second place in the preliminary round, giving them the opportunity to perform later that night in the finals round. The band also won the Award for Best Music in the 6A division.
“I really like the music in this year’s show,” Band parent Julie Trenary said. “It’s been great seeing the positive changes in the Westwood Band over the years.”
The marching band was focused and put their best efforts on the field for the finals performance, which took place around 10 a.m.
“I felt like the finals performance was our first good, focused run,”James Yan ’18 said.
Overall, the band came in second place, only 2.5 points away from beating the Westlake High School Marching Band. Regardless, the band was thrilled with their score.
“It was a lot of fun and I’m super proud of the progress that we’ve made from the beginning of the season,” Priyanka Paul ’17 said.
This week, the band added several new aspects to the show, such as new choreography and changes to the music. The goal was of these additions was to increase the visual look and the effectiveness of the music for the show.
“Saturday had some of the most impressive and hair-raising moments of the season,” Drum major Christian Sweet ‘16 said. “Every performance is a chance to get better, and if we continue improving at this rate, Atlanta will be unforgettable.”
The band looks forward to competing on Oct. 17 at the UIL Contest against many of the other bands in the region.
“We’re really proud of our kids performance and focus throughout the whole day,” Band Director Dacy said. “They represented the school well.”
