The Warriors competed in a district-wide swim meet including St. Dominic Savio High School on Sept. 24. Westwood’s main competition was Round Rock who they beat by a final score of 327-320 with McNeil trailing at 205. The girls’ and boys’ 400 yard freestyle relay were the last two events that got Westwood their points to come out above Round Rock. Even though they placed second in both, that was enough points for the combined team score to win first place over all.
“I love that as a freshman I can help contribute to the team and score points for Westwood on the A relay team,” said Portia Perley ‘19.
Even though they placed second in their last two races, the boys succeeded in winning first and second place in the 200 Medley Relay which is a great feat. The Westwood boys’ B team that placed second in the relay struggled to get that spot by beating Round Rock’s A team by .05 seconds. This race was an extremely tight competition with milliseconds in between each final time.
“I was nervous as I saw Round Rock’s anchor dive in before me,” Jesse Gu ‘16 said, “so when Liam touched the wall I took off in a sprint to catch him. Within seconds of reaching the wall I had managed to pass him, barely securing second place for my team.”
This meet was just another example of how dedicated the swimmers are to maintain their winning streak. They saw that they were behind and knew that they needed to pick up the slack. This was their second competitive meet, and considering they were swimming against every team in the district, it allowed them to see where they would place amongst everyone. The next swim meet will be October 3rd at Anderson Mill pool against Westlake and Lake Travis.
