For the weekends of Nov. 14-15 and 21-22, people from all around Austin were invited to tour various artists’ studios in the East Austin Studio Tour (EAST) and get to know some of the people who help make Austin such a unique place to live. The tour hosted a number of artists who specialized in a number of different medias, and featured people of all different backgrounds.
Not only did EAST allow attendees to view the works of artists in our own community, but allowed them to see the more creative aspect of their city. By giving people the opportunity to see hundreds of different artists and their differing styles, the artists hope to inspire others.
“It feels really good [to be a part of such a large community of artists] because the other artists are really supportive of each other,” artist Debbie Carroll said. “We’re in it together.”
And while the artists came from varying backgrounds, many were interested in art from a very young age.
“I’ve always wanted to be an artist.” Carroll said. “Even when I was a little girl I thought it was something I always wanted to do. I could draw well, and my teachers would save my work as examples.
For the artists, inspiration can come from anywhere, such as origami, animals, the Bible, and different places around the world.
“For me, a lot of my inspiration comes from traveling,” Carroll said. “We like to go to New Mexico a lot, so I get a lot of ideas from there. Sometimes my inspiration can be as close as my backyard.”
While spending the day touring studios, attendees can get to know artists, view their work, and if they choose to, purchase different pieces, supporting the artists who help keep our city diverse.
“It’s important to have days like this so that people know about the creative side of their community and support it because creativity drives ideas and innovations,” Carroll said.
EAST is an annual event, so if you missed it, check back in next year to support the artists who help keep Austin diverse community.
