In the movie Star Wars: The Force Awakens, most people are left with the big question of “What is Rey’s past? Who are her parents? From whom did she descend? The most popular theory is that Luke is her father. It only makes sense because his lightsaber called to her, and the Star Wars series has always been about Skywalkers. So, it is natural to believe that it would continue with Skywalkers. There are other theories, however, to satisfy those who say that Luke being her father is just too obvious to be true.
Obi Wan: This theory is that Obi Wan is Rey’s grandfather. It seems very unlikely because Obi Wan was a good Jedi who followed the rules, and it explicitly forbids Jedi from forming attachments such as marriage or family in the Jedi Code. Therefore, Obi Wan would have had to break the Jedi code in order for this to be true. Let’s say that he did break the Jedi Code and had a kid. Who would the mother be? And if there was someone who could potentially be the mother, their child would have then had to have a kid of his or her own which would be Rey.
Han Solo and Leia: This theory is purely based off the Expanded Universe, which is a collection of books, comic books, videogames, and toys that followed Star Wars Episode VI. It was said that Han and Leia had twins, one boy and one girl. The boy turned to the dark side, much like Kylo Ren. When he turned on his Jedi class and killed everyone, maybe they took Rey away, wiped her memory, and hid her on Jakku. There are some holes in this theory, however, and there is the fact that J.J. Abrams made a statement saying that the Expanded Universe is not canon.
Anakin: This fan theory from SuperCarlinBrothers is a little more confusing because Anakin isn’t exactly her father in this theory. Instead, Rey is an incarnation of Anakin. It would make sense because she has the same amount of power Anakin did before he went to the dark side. When Rey touched the lightsaber, she allegedly got memories of her past life as Anakin.
Luke: It only makes sense that Luke is Rey’s father. It was his lightsaber that was calling out to Rey, she was sent to find him on the island, and not to mention the Star Wars series has always been about the Skywalker family, so why change it? This theory just seems too good to be true, though some people are just sick of the whole “I am your father” spiel.
My personal favorite is that Rey is a part of the Kenobi and Skywalker family. Obi Wan secretly had a daughter who married Luke and then had Rey making her Luke’s daughter and Obi Wan’s granddaughter. In the end, however, the decision is up to J.J. Abrams. Who knows, maybe our little green friend Yoda is the father.
