Girls and Boys Water Polo Unite to Defeat Vandegrift Boys, Lose to LBJ Boys in Tournament
On Friday, March 25, the girls and boys water polo teams joined together to play in a tournament. Due to a lack of players available to go, the girls and boys water polo teams had to combine to play co-ed in the boys bracket of the tournament, once against the Vandegrift boys, and once against the LBJ boys.
“It was hard playing against the guys,” Abby King ‘18 said. “Some of them didn’t want to be too aggressive with the girls, some didn’t take us seriously, but there were some who were perfectly fine with doing anything to get the ball.”
The first game against Vandegrift, Westwood won 10-4. Most points were scored in the first half, and the team worked hard to gain control of the ball throughout the entire game.
“The guys at Vandegrift were fast to get down to the other side,” Ryan Cain ‘17 said. “We did a good job staying on them, and our goalie did a good job blocking the shots.”
In the game against LBJ, Westwood lost the game with a two point difference. The final score was 4-2. Both teams were equally as strong, just in different areas. Although Westwood had good offense and defense, but LBJ had a goalie who blocked almost every shot.
“The goalie for LBJ is good,” Angela Wang ‘17 said. “He blocked almost every shot we sent towards him. I’ve seen him play before. He was good then, he is good now.”
The coed team proved themselves in the tournament, impressing other teams and other coaches. They played their best, and won one out of the two games they were in.
