Acting 1’s Block 1 class performed the play Almost Maine in the Black Box Theater on Thursday, April 7. Several people attended, mainly parents and the friends of the actors in play. Over the course of about three weeks, the class worked together to rehearse and prepare the play.

“I enjoyed that everyone got so close to each other and we all really bonded through the whole rehearsal process and everything,” Paige Winterberg ‘19, an actor in the play, said.

Written by John Cariani, Almost Maine was first performed in 2004. The play itself is split into nine different parts, all of which explore the concepts of love and loss on a Friday winter night in the town of Almost, Maine.

“I think the play is really beautiful and romantic because it doesn’t take a normal, like, cheesy romantic story. It has normal people going into weird scenarios that people watching would be like, ‘Oh, that’s really weird’ but the people in this town just think it’s casual,” David Mais, ‘19 said.

While the actors enjoyed working together to organize their performance, they were not without their fair share of difficulties, such as scheduling issues and acting out relationships between characters. One particular difficulty that tions of the play was having to act out the romance within the play, especially kissing.

“I think the most challenging [part of the play] was trying to get our chemistry on stage together, because most of us haven’t been placed together and we haven’t had romantic experiences with each other on stage and so the hardest part was probably having to be romantic with someone else,” Mais said.

This play is both the first and last play that this class will perform this year, but the actors who took part in the play do plan on attending Acting 2 class next year.

“These are very talented students, and I’m very blessed that I’m able to call myself their director,” Ms. Milam, Assistant Theater Arts Director and Director of the play, said. “A lot of the work came from them and I’m very proud.”
