Dance Department Holds Jazz/Ballet Placement Auditions
On Tuesday, Apr. 5 girls and boys from Westwood and 8th graders from feeder schools had tryouts for placement in Jazz and Ballet classes. If anyone wanted to be in any class higher than Jazz 1 or Ballet 1, they had to attend tryouts.
The jazz tryouts began with warm ups, shortly followed by demonstrating turns and leaps across the floor. Then, the group had to learn a short dance that would be performed in small groups.
“The dance was really fast paced,” Zoë Johnson ‘18 said. “When we did the entire thing up to tempo, it got really hard, but in the end it was a really fun dance. While it was a challenge, it was a good experience.”
At the ballet tryouts, the group began at the barre, stretching. Then, similar to jazz, they got out on the floor and had to learn a short dance.
“The combo was really tough,” Alexis Barasch ‘19 said. “Some people trying out found it easier than others, which makes sense because some people were more experienced than others. The eighth graders were really good too.”
Overall, everyone who tried out did their best and are awaiting news through the mail, which will not come until after the Spring Show in dance.
