VPA Academy Hosts Showcase

Students exhibited their wide range of talents on Thursday, April 21 during the third annual VPA Showcase.

From plays to dances, a variety of arts were showcased for audiences to enjoy.

“We’re all different strings of VPA: orchestra, band, art, theater, and to all come together and see what everyone else is up to it gives people inspiration and informs us of what’s going on in our school and our community,” Kavya Rajesh ‘16 said.

Furthermore, there was especially an abundance of musical acts, including two vocal performances by siblings Joohee Han ‘17 and Minsoo Han ‘19.

“I was first introduced to the VPA Showcase in art, and one of the things that the teacher said is that you can do anything, you can sing and do a duet,” Joohee Han said. “I thought it would be great to do a duet with my brother, because we always enjoy singing and performing together.”

Additionally, pieces of artwork and costumes created by the technical theater class were displayed around the room. To supplement that, some students even did live art demonstrations.

“It’s a good way to perform art for people, which normally I wouldn’t really do,” Mia Fagan ‘18 said. “It’s interesting to show people art and how I make it instead of just showing the final.”

Not only did this event act as a great way for students to appreciate the talent of their peers, but it also helped bring the community closer together.

“I think a lot of kids at Westwood, we kind of live our own lives separately, and we don’t really connect with other people that maybe we share similar interests with and people that we can become friends with,” Rajesh said. “I would definitely encourage students in the future to check this out because it’s really easy to come to. It’s not a huge time commitment and it really brings a lot. You can learn a lot more from this than you realize.”
