Davalos Named Coach of the Year
Being called coach of the year is a great milestone in a coach’s career, but Mr. Doug Davalos, the women’s varsity basketball coach would tell you otherwise. Davalos, who was named All Central Texas Girls’ Basketball Coach of the Year by the Austin American Statesman, hesitates to place too much importance on individual awards.
“You don’t live your life trying to think about awards but when they come they’re nice,” Davalos said.
Westwood is known for its strong academics and hardworking students. Davolos intends to replicate that in his work ethic.
“I kind of run our basketball program like an IB program,” Davalos said. “The expectations are very high in the program and we expect our girls to work extremely hard.”
The 2015-16 season was the best in the school’s history, with an overall record of 28-8. Sewing up the district championship with a 12-2 record, the Lady Warriors went to the third round of playoffs before losing to Dekaney. Point guard Sophie Taylor ‘16 signed to play for the Houston Baptist University.
This remarkable season has raised the bar for the Lady Warriors. As the team prepares for next season, past achievements and potential translate to hard work.
“It’s all about the process of being your best everyday,” Davalos said.
