On Friday, Oct. 7 the Lady Warrior JV white volleyball team took on the McNeil Mavericks for their Dig for the Cure game. Dig for the Cure is the volleyball program’s annual event to raise awareness for breast cancer. With the crowd cheering and wearing pink, the team won in two sets, beating their district rival.

The Lady Warriors came out strong with kills from Reagan Harrington ‘20 and Freya Rhodes ‘19. McNeil began to take the lead, but the girls stayed strong with defense from libero Katie Howard ‘19 and coverage on the net from the front row players. After exchanging game points, McNeil’s right side player hit out allowing the set to be won 27-25 by Westwood.

“I think we played really well as a team,” Freya Rhodes ‘19 said. “We have been working on our effort and communication which showed during the game. Also, it was good to get revenge on McNeil.”

To start the second set, setter Payton Sequerra ‘20 executed well positioned sets for her hitters. With the Lady Warriors leading 14-11 McNeil called their first timeout of the set. In the last points of the set, middle Alyssa Popelka ‘19 scored with a kill and McNeil hit out on Westwood’s game point. With a score of 25-20, Westwood won in two sets.

“I’m proud of my team and how we played tonight,” JV White Coach Jennifer Breedlove said. “We lost to McNeil in our first round of district play so to come back and beat them this time showed our improvement.”

Come out and support the Lady Warriors as they take on Cedar Ridge. The game will be on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at Westwood High School.
