Varsity Volleyball Secures a Spot in Districts

Securing their rightfully deserved spot at district, the Warriors defeat the Raiders in the first three sets on Future Stars Night. Future Stars Night is a program that Westwood High School coordinates with Canyon Vista and Grisham Middle School, showing the middle school volleyball girls what it’s like to be a Westwood Warrior. The team won their game in two sets, securing their spot in district. We see how well the girls work together on the court which comes from a place of not only hard work but trust which translated into points for them last night.

“I feel really focused and pumped up while warming up for the games,” Mackenzie Downs ‘17 said. “I like to watch the crowds grow as everyone walks in.”

The future stars not only got to watch the varsity volleyball girls play, but they were a large portion of the crowd, which helped the players get pumped up during their game. The Warriors came out strong winning the first point starting with a serve by Mackenzie Downs ‘17, and ended with a strong kill from Tori Clitheroe ‘17. A timeout from the Raiders was called with the Warriors still in the lead 17-13. Many strong assists by Paige Etherington ‘17 who was able to find Cara Dolber ‘17 in many offensive plays, which comes to the end of the first set with the Warriors winning 25-17.

“The best part of the game is getting to play with people I love and playing every point out like it’s my last,” Ashlyn Hill ‘17 said. “I never have any doubts because I know that my team has my back in any situation.”

To begin the second set, the Warriors won the first point of the match, looking confident and composed. This set was mesmerizing, the points continuing to go back and forward between both teams, until the Warriors called for a timeout and for the first time this game the Warriors were down.

“I would say the most intense part of the game was in the second set when I called a timeout at 9-13. That was our biggest deficit of the game but the girls still had great composure,” Coach Tara Nelson said. “They came out of the timeout and went on a run to reclaim the lead and never looked back.”
