Home Run Derby Offers Food, Music, Softball

The Lady Warrior softball team will hold a barbecue lunch plate sale and Home Run Derby this Saturday.

According to varsity player Adrianna Madison ’18, participants are divided into age groups and given 10 swings for $10. A volunteer or coach throws underhand pitches, and whoever gets the most “home-runs” (hits that go past a certain distance) wins the category. Each participant hits their 10 balls and can pay another $10 for more swings if they’d like. Prizes will be awarded to the winners in each category.

  • Ages 6 and under hit off of a tee and have to hit the ball past cones that are marked at 10 feet away.
  • Ages 6-9 hit off a tee as well, but the cones are set to 20 feet away.
  • Ages 10-13 will have a ball tossed to them and they have to hit it 70 feet (past the infield dirt).
  • Ages 14 and up have to hit a normal home run, which is over the fence.

The event gives the softball players a chance to bond and have fun with their teammates, and brings families and friends out to the ballpark.

“I have coached at Westwood for 12 seasons and this is our 10th Annual Home Run Derby,” head softball coach Tiffany Gates said. “It is a great way to get our community, staff, and fans involved.”

Plates from Rudy’s BBQ will include meat options, two sides, and Bush’s tea for $10. According to Coach Gates, parents will be helping in the concession stand with other food options for anyone who “isn’t into BBQ.”

The derby is a major fundraiser for the softball teams. Profits from the event will be used to purchase equipment such as a field hose, protective hitting screens, and new team bat packs for each JV and varsity player.

“A lot of the uniforms are pretty torn up, so the money will be really beneficial to the program,” JV player Nicolle Duvall ’18 said.

The event begins with registration at noon on Saturday at the Westwood softball field.
