On Jan. 9th, the first day back from winter break, the Warriors (2-1) took on the Stony Point Tigers (0-4) on their home court. The crowd included fans of all ages including the Grisham and Canyon Vista Middle School boys basketball teams. This week the Warriors had all of their team healthy and ready to play which allowed them to beat the Tigers 53-38.

“I felt really confident going into the game,” shooting guard Latham Robinson ‘18 said. “I know that our team this year is special and we can beat anyone if we play our game.”

Daniel Victor ‘18 put the Warriors on the board first, with a two-pointer, and plays that led by point guard Brandon Parks ‘20, they remained in the lead until there was three minutes left in the quarter. However, with a three-pointer shot by Jacob Hines ‘18 the Warriors led 9-8 at the end of the quarter.

To start the second quarter, Robinson ‘18 came out and shot a three-pointer for the Warriors, giving them a further lead. The two teams fought against each other for control over the ball, but due to consistent rebounding by Christian Robinson ‘20 and quick breaks by Patrick Sladek ‘19, the Warriors were able to keep the lead and went into halftime 29-16.

During halftime the middle school basketball players in the stands were able to come onto the court and play a game of knockout.

After halftime, both teams came out with strong defense, which made them struggle to get the ball into the basket. The majority of the third quarter was low scoring, until the last two minutes where the teams gained points off of free throws. Parks and Robinson ‘18 gave the Warriors five points off the frees, placing them ahead 37-21 at the end of the quarter.

“We didn’t shoot the ball great and went a stretch without scoring in the third quarter,” Hines said. “However our defense was the game changer, our team played great defense.”

With an enthusiastic student section cheering them on, the Warriors remained strong through the final quarter and maintained their lead. The Tigers constantly fouled the Warriors, which allowed them to gain multiple points off free throws. With a final shot by Mason Flood ‘19, the Warriors won 52-38.

“The biggest thing that stuck out to me was the way Robinson ‘20 played, he came off the bench and immediately contributed,” Hines said. “He hustled and got many extra possessions for us.”

The Warriors will take on the Round Rock Dragons in their next game on Jan. 12th at Round Rock High School beginning at 7 p.m.. Go Wood.
