The freshman volleyball team was defeated by the Round Rock Dragons with a score of 0-2 on Friday, Sept. 28 during the annual Dig for the Cure match. Pink balloons were placed throughout the stands, and team members wore pink scrunchies and t-shirts to raise awareness for breast cancer. The proceeds from the game will be donated toward cancer research.

The first set had the Dragons taking the lead. The Lady Warriors were trailing behind, calling a timeout with the score at 9-14 in order to seek better communication tactics. Eventually, the set ended 2-25 with Round Rock winning.

“I thought that they learned a lot from their mistakes,” freshman coach Makenzie McGalliard said. “It didn’t go exactly how we wanted, but I can tell that they [grew] from this experience. I feel like mentally we did well.”

The freshman team started the second set by pulling ahead 9-7 with a stronger defense and better communication between the players. However, the Lady Warriors were unable to stay in the lead. Round Rock ultimately won the game, ending with a score of 10-25.

“I learned that we really need to earn from our mistakes,” Sumedha Jayagopal ‘22 said. “We can also work on finding the weak spots in the opposing team. Based off this game, we know that we really need to communicate more and figure out how the other team plays to make a better plan.”

Coach McGalliard hopes to have the team adjust to a faster pace game in order to prepare for the rest of the season. The freshman volleyball team will face the Stony Point Tigers at Stony Point High School on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 6:30 p.m..
