Architecture Students Final at National Competition

The Senior Warrior Architects recently placed as finalists in the 2018 National DiscoverDesign Competition. Out of the 15 finalists, the Westwood team made up of seniors Dylan Veino, Anish D’Souza, and Amy Ma was the only team from Texas to make finals.  The challenge for the competition was to design a community market that would improve access to resources and provide a public gathering space for the city of Chicago.

“We were given a lot of space to work with but we left a lot of space open for future additions or changes to be made,” Ma said. “What sets our project apart was that it had an amphitheater, which not only attracts people to the market but also keeps them inside while also encouraging more interaction between people.”

A total of 226 students nationwide participated in the competition and 163 students from 14 states submitted final designs.

“The hardest part was the actual design process, we had to design our own parts, such as benches or lights, instead of being able to use ones that were already created. Everything in the project was designed by ourselves,” Ma said.
