On Tuesday, Jan. 15 the JV girls’ basketball team defeated the Hendrickson Hawks in an intense game. After a close match full of many fouls and a lot of crowd involvement, the Warriors won 56-51.

The game was off to a good start from the very beginning, with the Warriors quickly racking up points and demonstrating good defense, especially from Emma Goolsbey ‘21. Not only this, but the team made solid rebounds and was able to get a 17-10 lead within the first half. During the last minute of the first quarter, Peyton Halley 21’ brought the score up to 20-10 with a final basket. As the offense dominated throughout the next quarter, and the team consistently made good shots, they were able to keep well ahead of the opposition. Near the end of the first half, Jaslyn Williams ‘20 made a two-pointer, bringing the score to 40-24 in the Warriors’ favor.

“We tried to play good defense and try our best,” Halley said. “We can’t get in our heads or get down when we notice they’re coming back, and [have to] keep pushing our lead when we have it.”

The opposition came back with more energy in the second half, quickly racking up points and pushing the Warriors to step up their game. Goolsbey made the first shot of the half, and the rest of the team showed their skillful passing technique. There were more than a few fouls throughout this half, creating a lot of tension between the two crowds. As the Hawks kept fighting harder, the Warriors were able to keep up, never getting too far behind. During the last minute of the game the score was 52-49 with the Warriors in the lead, and very accurate shots from Megan Luu ‘21 sealed the win 56-51.

“I had confidence in the team because we played really hard,” Elizabeth Joyner ‘22 said. “Even though we blew [around] a 22 point lead, we were still able to stay calm and work back up.”

The team will face the Round Rock Dragons at home on Tuesday Jan. 22.
