On Tuesday, Jan. 22, the varsity girls’ soccer team faced the Round Rock Dragons in a tough, windy, and rainy battle with an ending score of 4-1. The Lady Warriors did their best to stay on the Dragons but ended up with their first loss at home in five years.

We had some unlucky bounces but overall as a team, we played well,” Coach Malcolm Framjee said.

In the beginning half of the game, Colleen Wyrick ‘21 scored the first goal of the night. Goalkeeper Madison Broadbent ‘21 caught multiple attempts by the Dragons’ players. Broadbent steadied herself to save the shot, however, it slipped through her grasp and the Dragons tied the game up 1-1. The Warriors’ defense, anchored by Leah Zahm ‘20 and Claire Tinker ‘19 up to this point in the season, had kept opponents away from the goal. However, the Dragons’ precise passing infiltrated the Warrior’s defense and ended the first half, 2-1.

We definitely could’ve played better, but I think we fought really hard. Altogether my team and I could’ve just connected more passes and communicate better,” Wyrick said.

Within the second half of the rainy game, the Warriors played hard to catch up to the Dragons. A Rock player scored on Broadbent and she caught it at first, but the ball slipped out of her hands and back into the net putting the score at 3-1, still in the Dragons’ favor. After running back and forth on the field for a bit, a Dragon scored again on Broadbent from afar and in the corner, out of her reach putting the score at 4-1.

It was also probably in the least ideal conditions that we could’ve had,” Tinker said. “I think if you had been to the game you’d see they had probably five shots on goal and they scored four of the five in.”

The Lady Warriors were sad to lose the game against Round Rock after not losing one on their home turf for five years.

I think this just gets a bit more fire under our bellies because that was one of the games where we couldn’t have done much but we wished we could’ve,” Tinker said.

Catch the Lady Warriors next on Friday, Jan. 25 at the Warrior Bowl at 7:15 p.m. against the McNeil Mavericks.
